Authentic American Western Culinary Tours

Posted by Dan on Dec 22, 2008 in Lucky Hit

The Top Western US Food Tours

Touring through the American West can be a great experience for you and your family. Whether you choose to do your own walking and car tours, or a booked tourist tour on a bus or train, you will surely enjoy your touring experience. Moreover, if you choose to do a food tour, you will find yourself marinated in history, steeped in thousands of years of foods and harvests, and baked in a warm land where various cultures meet, meld, and multiply.

There are many ways for you to enjoy the West.  Montana tourism helps you make your own plans. If you want to go it on your own, you can take tours of the major cities throughout Arizona, Texas, California, and Nevada, and go from gambling to skiing, waiting for the stars to come out at night to waiting for the Hollywood stars to walk the red carpet. With the rising prices of gasoline and the likewise rising prices of food, you may want to save this road trip for later.

Many different companies offer different food tours of the American West. For instance, the famous Santa Fe School of Cooking has a Culture and Cuisine Tour that happens every year, and that has been documented as one of the best tours of the Southwest imaginable. In this Culture and Cuisine tour, you will tour through the surrounding areas of New Mexico vacations and explore it for its roots in ancient cooking and agriculture. You will also tour through the best restaurants in Santa Fe, New Mexico and meet, face-to-face, the chefs who are at the forefront of this branch of American cuisine.

The Santa Fe School of Cooking tour includes four nights of lodging as well as meals, except for one night when you have to go to dinner on your own. You will also be provided with the transportation to and from different places. You will also get three culinary classes, which will teach you the history of New Mexico by tracing its culinary roots, the different aspects of cooking with chilies, and a real cooking class at Los Poblanos. You will also be provided with wine at most of your meals. Moreover, you get a walking tour of Santa Fe, which allows you to go downtown and taste real Western cuisine!

If you miss the Santa Fe School of Cooking Culture and Cuisine Tour, you can still hook up with the school and get your dose of cooking and history through its Mountain Adventures. Built for outdoor lovers, this tour is offered in mid-September through a partner of the cooking school. You will stay at a luxury resort during this tour, and you will still get some cooking classes along with your outdoor treks.

Another way to get in touch with the area’s history is through communing with the Native Americans who still live in the area. Colorado tourism allows you to do so through Colorado Plateau Journeys, which offers an exploration of the ancient cultures within the Southwest. You will be able to talk to tribes such as the Hopi; learn about their culture, talk to their elders, cook and taste their cuisine, participate and watch their rituals, and walk away with a greater appreciation of the first true Americans who lived on this land.

These are only a few top tours that you might be interested in. For more information, talk to your travel agent about options in getting yourself into the Southwest and going on a food tour. There are many other food tours available through many different states, so keep on doing your research and you’ll soon find the package that you like.

Let’s have a peak at how a diamond is graded – the truth about clarity!

Posted by Dan on Dec 22, 2008 in Lucky Hit

This time I want to take a look at one of the “4 C’s” of how diamonds are graded.  For those that aren’t aware, diamonds are ranked in 4 main categories – cut, color, carat and clarity.  Today I want to take a close look at one of the biggies – clarity.

The clarity grading scale goes from IF (the best) down to I3 (the worst).  As a whole, there are ten grades that a diamond can fall into.

Clarity refers to the number of “inclusions” that are present in the diamond.  Basically, inclusions are small blemishes or imperfections.  These occur naturally when the rock is forming in the earth and inclusions are found in nearly all diamonds.

In order to place a grade on the diamond, a gemologist looks at the diamond under magnification to look at any inclusions that are in the stone.  The grading is then submitted based on how many inclusions, and also how apparent or big they are.

As an example, a diamond that has an IF grading has no inclusions whatsoever.  This is extremely rare, and as you can imagine, this type of diamond will have a huge price premium attached to it.

A diamond graded VS2 will have “very slight” inclusions – these will only be noticeable when viewed under a microscope and aren’t noticeable with your human eye alone.  These diamonds are priced for significantly less that an IF graded diamond.

Make sure to understand the different ways diamonds are graded.  Pick up a diamond buying guide - this will make a huge difference in the end and will make it possible to save a lot of money on your purchase.  Just a little education will be the difference in finding an affordable engagement ring instead of shelling out big bucks and putting a huge smile on your jewelers face.

Mini Soho

Posted by Dan on Dec 22, 2008 in Lucky Hit

Soho – district in Manhattan noted for its old warehouses converted into restaurants, galleries and theaters.

Why would Coach name this line Soho? Simply put, it’s a classic design brought back to life in a way that only Coach could produce. These amazing vintage mini bags, wallets, and purses are perfect for fine dining, art gazing and for placing in your lap at a theater.

The Black Coach Soho signature purse is the hallmark of a woman’s delicate elegance and fortitude. That is why the Soho is so special. This line is the best of the best. As in vintage, it comes from the finest line of Coach Purses. It is the best of the past complimenting the trends of today. It represents the quality of past techniques and designs coupled with the diversity of today.

I have a black Signature Coach with the soft leather trim and silver buckles Soho. I love this bag. This is the bag I use daily. It compliments everything in my closet. It is perfect for all occasions, whether a trip to the grocery store, work or an evening out, you really cannot go wrong with Coach Soho mini.

Let’s talk about durability. The Soho is also so incredibly durable that it can withstand my toddler’s destructive little fingers. This bag did not become a classic because it was crafted from cheap materials put together sparingly. It is classic because of Coach’s signature materials and vintage hobo design that are guaranteed to outlast any trend, style or fad.

The strap is small enough to be hand held without looking like a dingle berry but long enough to be held under your arm incase you need a free hand. My Soho is a zipper top handbag, but I also like the flip top design Soho in tweed brown, blue and black. It is more modern vintage than my Soho because it captures the essence of the late 70′s and early 80′s.

Coach is no dummy, old trends always come back. Today the 80′s are hot, but Coach has put a classic spin on the Boom era. Today we know that hot pink is not a color that should be worn, it is a highlighter. The Coach Soho also comes in twill. In other words, tweed was originally called twill because it was an unfinished woolen fabric woven into a twill pattern instead of a plain pattern. Why would you want plain? While the Soho line and hobo design is simple, it is defiantly not plain. Who else can design a mini purse in tweed blue and make it look hot?

Have you ever noticed that a couch made with tweed has outlasted the ones made of other fabrics? Coach knows that quality is better than quantity. So it produces products that will last. Tweed use to be customary because it is moisture-resistant and durable but became obsolete because of the rate at which the economy was booming. Therefore most companies switched to more cost effective goods such as cotton and polyester.

Whatever your flavor: red, green, white, pink, brown, black, small, large, mini bags, wallets or purses, Coach has got it all. It is a little more expensive, but you know it will last. I mean last; not just as in it will not fall apart, but last as in; whatever the trend happens to be, you know that the Soho line and hobo design will always be in.

The Mini Soho reminds me of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Audrey Hepburn is the icon of vintage style. She is the fine wine of early Hollywood traditions and a legend not just by talent but by beauty and grace, a face that will live forever. Like the Coach Soho, a fine wine of early trends that became a legend not just by craftsmanship but by the beauty and grace they bring to any woman. Maybe a Soho won’t make you look like Audrey Hepburn, but it sure will make you feel like her.
