How Adults Can Start Playing The Piano Again…After Years Of Being Away From The Piano

Posted by Dan on Jan 2, 2009 in Lucky Hit

There are millions of adults who took piano lessons when they were kids, and would love to start playing again, but dread the idea of starting over again and taking lessons. To see how easy it is to get started again, take a look at this blog on Piano Chords & Chord Progressions.

It’s true that you never forget certain things that you learn as a child, like riding a bicycle. Playing piano is another example. A minimum of two to three years of piano lessons is enough to instill an indelible knowledge of piano basics. That knowledge will likely be remembered throughout adulthood.

However, some adults who have been out of practice for several years may find returning to piano lessons challenging. Re-learning piano as an adult can be intimidating. Starting piano lessons again can be fulfilling though for those prepared to tackle the challenges.

One of the biggest challenges of re-learning piano as an adult is changing methods. Adults who took only a few years of piano lessons as children may have initially learned to play by rote. Playing piano by rote focuses more on memorization and mimicry than on learning to read music and understand chords.

Children tend to learn very quickly by rote. Children who learn by this method appear to progress quickly. Eventually though, as pieces get more difficult, learning tends to slow down significantly. Grasping new skills becomes increasingly difficult. This method is becoming less and less favored by piano instructors today for this reason.

Another hurdle to clear when re-learning piano as an adult is chords and theory. This is especially true if an adult took only a few years of piano lessons as a child. Adults who had five or fewer years of piano lessons likely didn’t learn chord theory. Even adults who learned to read music as children frequently have trouble grasping chords.

Learning anything (piano or otherwise) is always harder in adulthood than childhood. It’s not impossible though. Anyone with a foundation in music is at an advantage when re-learning piano as an adult.

Are you an adult trying to brush up on old piano skills or learn new ones? Here are four things to consider before you start:

1. Be willing to put aside old habits. The piano hasn’t changed since you were a child. Teaching methods may have though. Don’t discount a teaching method just because it’s different from what you’re used to. Compare different learning methods before deciding which one is best for you.

2. Be prepared to start from scratch. It will be easier for you to ease into piano lessons simply because you’re familiar with a keyboard. That doesn’t mean it won’t be challenging. Don’t expect to play a classical sonata in the first month. Take things slowly, perhaps even starting with a refresher of the basics (i.e., scales).

3. Be committed to rehearsing your songs. Remember your mother nagging you to practice as a kid? Mom’s not around now, so it’s up to you to push yourself. Piano lessons are only as good as the effort you’re willing and able to put in. Make daily practice time a priority.

4. Find the right teacher either in person or online. There are many excellent courses on the web you can take that allow you to progress at your own pace. Check out  PlayPiano.com and PianoLessonsByVideo.com. Getting the right piano instructor makes all the difference in the world. Look for a teacher who is experienced with working with adults.  He or she will then set you on the right course for re-learning.

Re-learning piano as an adult can be very rewarding. Not only will you improve your piano skills; you’ll stimulate your brain too. This will probably help you improve other areas of your life. Adults who take piano lessons often report a better ability to concentrate. Many also realize a greater aptitude for learning other new skills. These things carry over into other parts of adult life, from work, to hobbies and even raising children.

Avoiding Trade Show Errors That Can Be Very Costly

Posted by Dan on Jan 2, 2009 in Lucky Hit

Trade shows are always a great task to complete successfully; there are always some unforeseen troubles that you may be able to minimize.   Experience goes a long way and is worth its weight in gold in the trade show industry.  Coordination is the key to having a successful trade show or event.  Here are some of the most common problems that can occur at trade shows.

1-Shipping your trade show display off target can be a major conundrumYour truck arrives too early or too late can get you penalized by show management, and this can be costly.   The show management will charge you extra drayage for this. If your load is not off loaded you have to now pay for storage and further fees to the trucking  company for holding your shipping load until show management is ready to off load your shipment on the proper target date and time.

2-One of the most common problem that can cost you a great deal is not having your electrical laid when you arrive to set up your trade show exhibit.   Time is money and if you have a large exhibit booth which uses union service to set up, you will have to wait until your electrician lay the floor electrical.  Your set up crew gets paid by the hour, this is costing you a great deal and of course the electricians have no responsibility to you or the labor. You are stuck having to wait and to pay for unused labor. That’s money for wasted time.

3-Lost shipment of items on the show floor can also be very costly. This is a lot more common than anyone thinks. Most of the time the cause for this is mislabeled exhibit components.  This can be a total disaster leaving you the exhibitor trying to figure out what to do about your trade show booth.   Having to find your trade show booth or lost crate can be frustrating and can be a nightmare.  You either have to have the freight department try to find your booth which can take hours if not days. If you mislabeled that particular item you will have to pay for the hours it takes to find your items.

Things happen at trade shows but there is good news; these incidences can be minimized if not eliminated with an experienced exhibit coordinator or exhibit house.   There are unpredicted items that can happen. Experience and proper coordination can make your next trade show problems much easier to handle.  A great solution can be to use a turnkey trade show display rental program certainly not all unforeseen problems can be avoided, but having the experience to deal with the problem certainly can minimize the damage it can make. The First Home

Posted by Dan on Jan 2, 2009 in Lucky Hit

My son and his wife are entering the stage of there life where they are going to be homeowners. They have been married for three years and have been saving their money and building their credit rating so they can afford a home of their own. They have been living a very frugal life, not taking vacations and working over time hours to make this happen.

Their goal is to have more money and time once they move into their house. They have also been buying nice pieces of furniture to put into their own space when they get it. They went to the bank to get prior approved for a loan so that they would be able to put money down on a house when they found one they liked.

When they felt they were ready they met with a realtor and began looking at real estate listings. The realtor tried to convince them that they could afford a home that was a higher rate than they were comfortable paying. They had discussed this with us as well as their friends. We all gave them the same message; do not pay so much for a home that you are scraping by each month to make the payments. They both have good jobs with generous salaries. We suggested that they take on a house payment that they would still be able to handle if one of them lost their job or was cut back on hours.

The last thing you want to see happen is to lose your job and your home as well. This had happened to friends of theirs so they knew it was possible. They told the realtor that they only wanted to look at real estate listings in their price range.

They are looking at a good time because it is definitely a buyers market and decided to look in the Sarasota Florida MLS Listings. There are several homes that have been on the market for quite a while. One house that they drove past often on their way to our house had been for sale for over a year. When they had checked the price on the real estate listings when it first went on the market is was out of their price range.

The house was listed by the realty company that they were working with, so they inquired about it. The house had a huge back yard and two bedrooms upstairs and two down stairs there were three bathrooms and a formal living room as well as a family room.

All the cabinets in the kitchen had been custom made by the owner’s father. The realtor told them that the house was one of the greatest values in the real estate listings in that price range. Even though it was higher than they wanted to spend they went and looked at the property. They loved everything about the house.

They decided that they had nothing to lose by making an offer. They offered the highest amount that they had budgeted for, which was several thousand less than the owners had the property listed at. The owners were relocating to another state due to a job offer and were getting frustrated at not selling in the home. They took the offer. My son and his wife now have a beautiful home to call their own.

Prescott Arizona Home Builders – Tips For Choosing the Best Contractor for You

Posted by Dan on Jan 2, 2009 in Lucky Hit

Building a custom home is often one of the largest financial investments you will make. With so much at stake, you certainly don’t want to encounter significant troubles that could have been avoided by taking the time to adequately investigate the contractor.

Choosing a good builder is therefore critical. It is imperative to have a builder who is well-accomplished and of high integrity, one with the proper know-how and skills in constructing a new home. One of the key facets of this is getting a contractor who is skilled at supervising the team of subcontractors necessary for building a well-made house.

Following are several valuable tips in choosing your Prescott home builders:

Don’t underestimate the importance of developing a strong relationship with your home builder. The ideal candidate is one you belive you will like, trust and respect.

Ask for references and verify their certification and qualification statements.  Make certain the prospective contractor is insured and certified – you can avoid wasting time investigating builders if you’re uncertain of their qualifications in the first place.  Contact the state or local licensing board  and the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been registered against the contractor.

Go Over the records on file for former homes constructed by the builder. Request a list of previous jobs and visit the local government office where records of inspections and permits are maintained. These are public records and should be easily accessed for viewing. In particular, look for failed inspections or permit violations. Understand that even the best of builders will often have a few minor issues; however, repeat violations or extensive failures should raise a red flag.

Find out how many years the contractor has been constructing homes, especially in that specific area. Longevity is a significant indication of quality workmanship and customer service.

Find a good builder’s checklist and use it when meeting with potential builders. Asking information like what locations, price ranges, and materials they specialize in allows you to assess the builder’s expertise with regard to your specific needs.

Speaking of which, be sure to look for a contractor who builds the specific type of homes that you want to build. Builders will have different areas of expertise – be sure to select someone with the proper experience.

Personal referrals can be the best method for finding good Prescott contractors. Ask satisfied homeowners in the region for builders they would unreservedly commend to you.

Be certain to speak with people who have recently had homes built by the contractor you are considering. The feedback of actual homeowners can make all the difference.

When you are at last ready to hire the contractor, be certain to read the contract carefully – make sure it is complete and correctly covers all aspects talked about previously. Also, be sure the builder offers a warranty with your new home. This can be crucial to protect your substantial investment.

Choosing the proper contractor is perhaps the most critical step in building your new home. Following appropriate guidelines can help you find a quality builder in your area and fend off the pitfalls of substandard workmanship. These tips will assist you in finding the Prescott builders who are best-suited to build the home of your dreams.
