The Pritikin Principle

Posted by Dan on Jan 6, 2009 in Lucky Hit

With so many diets out there today, the search for the right one can be frustrating. For this reason, doing some research on diets before you get involved is an excellent idea. Why? Well, because you can learn all the basics, as well as the pros and cons, before you even start on the diet. One diet out there that many people have heard of and tried is Pritikin Principle. Not sure whether or not this could be the right diet for you? Well, let’s take a closer look at the diet to figure out whether or not it will really work well for you.

Overview of the Pritikin Principle

The Pritikin Principle Diet is one that was developed by Nathan Pritikin and it has been around for more than 30 years now. This is a diet that is very low fat, and while is mostly based on eating vegetables, fruits, and grains, it is not totally a vegetarian diet. Only 10% of this diet is fat. Nathan’s son, Robert, has now taken over this concept and has added to it and tweaked it just a bit. He stresses that you should choose foods that have low calories for their density and then you should fill up on them, since you’ll feel really full but won’t be consuming as many calories.

People It Works For Best

This diet is one that is a great fit for those who want to change their entire eating habits to lose some weight over time slowly. Also those who want to start using vegetarian principles in their diet will find that this is a great diet to check out as well. Instead of just being a diet, it focuses on becoming an entire lifestyle, so it is great for people who want an entire change of life. However, those who love their meats and sweets from time to time may not find this diet to be the right fit.

Pros and Cons to Consider

As with any diet, the Pritikin Principle diet has both pros and cons that you should take into consideration. Here are a few of the most common pros and cons that you may want to think about before you decide this is the right diet for you.

- Pro #1 – Focuses on Healthy Eating – One of the key pros of the Pritkin Principle Diet is that it really focuses on healthy eating. The foods allowed in the diet are foods that are full of great vitamins and minerals, so you really get the important nutrients that help to keep your body healthy. Also, the foods that you eat make you feel full as well, which means you don’t constantly have to deal with cravings.

- Pro #2 – Allows a Variety of Foods – There are a variety of different foods that you are allowed to eat as well. This makes it a better diet than some diets that are extremely restrictive. When you have a variety of foods to eat, you are less likely to get bored.

- Pro #3 – Starch is Allowed in Moderation – While there are some diets that totally get rid of carbs, this diet allows you to have some carbs as long as it is done in moderation. This is a healthier choice than just totally getting rid of the carbohydrates in your diet.

- Pro #4 – Doesn’t Go Crazy with Excessive Calorie Counting – You really don’t have to stress about excessively having to count the calories that you eat. It can be a pain to count every calorie, but with this diet you’ll know that the foods you are eating are low calorie.

- Con #1 – Large Amounts of High Fiber Foods – One of the main cons to this diet is that you eat many foods that are high in fiber, since it helps to make you feel full and improve the way the digestive system works. However, over time this can cause swelling and bloating and you may not be able to eat enough in one meal to feel satisfied.

- Con #2 – No Cheat Days Available – Many people find that the fact there are no cheat days to this diet to be a huge con. So, some people may find that this diet is really hard to stick to all the time, since they don’t get some of their favorite foods.

- Con #3 – Not Enough Healthy Fats – This is a diet that is low in fat, and it can be a con since you may not be getting the healthy fats that your body really does need to be healthy.

Food Do’s and Don’ts

The foods that are supposed to be eaten on Pritikin Principle diet include foods that have very few calories per pound. So, you are to avoid foods that have high calorie content and stick to grains, fruits, and vegetables that allow you to eat large quantities for relatively few calories. Doing this allows you to fill your stomach so you won’t feel hungry and consume high calorie foods. Some of the foods that are really preferred in the diet include oats, brown rice, apples, squash, onions, millet, potatoes, barley, bananas, pears, beans, dark green lettuces, and strawberries.

Opinions from the Medical Community

While the medical community tends to be quite happy about all the nutrients that you’ll be getting from the diet, the one problem that they have is that the fat in the diet is extremely low and may be a problem for your health. Fat soluble vitamins are also limited in this diet as well. This means that you may have problems with skin health, proper growth, and normal cell functions because you are not getting enough fat in the diet.

Disclaimer: Always consult your doctor before starting a diet program.

Is It Time To Get A Term Life Insurance Policy?

Posted by Dan on Jan 6, 2009 in Lucky Hit

So, you’ve come to the decision that it’s time to get a life insurance policy. Now it’s time to decide whether or not to buy term life insurance. Depending on your age, you may find that term life insurance works best for your situation. Term life insurance is ideal for younger people with families to support. In fact, term life insurance could be the most affordable option for you until you reach the age of 50.

One benefit of selecting cheap term life insurance is that your monthly premium payments will always be the same. The amount you pay on the first month is the same amount you will pay on the last month. Having a fixed monthly payment for a fixed number of months makes it much easier when you’re trying hard to manage your finances.

If you are seriously considering term life insurance, keep in mind that there are many different kinds of term life insurance policies. This includes decreasing term insurance, increasing term insurance, increasable term insurance, decreasing term insurance and renewable term insurance among many. It’s important to find the type of term life insurance that fits your needs best.

Term life insurance provides a specified amount of money to your dependents if you die, to cover costs like a mortgage and education. The term of the policy is determined when you sign up for insurance. Term life insurance is cheaper to purchase than whole life insurance because a beneficiary payout is only made if you die before the end of the term. The proceeds from term insurance coverage are paid to your beneficiaries without the deduction of any federal taxes.

Does Piano Playing Make You Smarter?

Posted by Dan on Jan 6, 2009 in Lucky Hit

Does hearing music cause you to be more intelligent? If you master the performance of a musical instrument will your brain size increase? Does learning to play the piano really make you smarter? Inquiries similar to this have been exploding everywhere during the past several years, not only in scientific journals.

Currently, the media has been very interested by the studies about brain development and music, ready to broadcast about the most recent research, making the parents of young children who adore music very happy. All of these details, and some incorrect information, has caused a lot of uncertainty about what music does and if music lessons help the brain function better. It all comes down to this: Many people find that the studies relating music and the brain are befuddling.

Partially, this is because of the way that the words “The Mozart Effect” was made popular by the media and ended up being used as a synonym for any condition that music has a positive influence on cognition or behavior. As a matter of fact, the Mozart Effect is based on a study done in 1993 by Frances Rauscher, Gordon Shaw and Katherine Ky, which was printed in the renowned journal “Nature.” The scientists discovered that 36 students in college who tuned into 10 minutes of a Mozart composition had a better score on a spatial-temporal assignment than if they had heard calming techniques or did not hear anything at all.

An enchanted media described this fascinating study as “Mozart makes you smarter” which is an exaggeration of the first results. But there is very little doubt that piano lessons or other musical instruction benefits the student in many different ways. As Rauscher describes in a later article, the Mozart Effect was researched with just adults, with just several minutes duration and spatial temporal reasoning were the only concept that was analyzed. Since all the findings have surfaced, the industry has come out with books, CD’s, and many websites stating that listening the Classical music will help make children more intelligent.

Since science has opposing views, as well as being confused about the Mozart Effect, this has caused parents to be unsure about what to believe. Parents wonder: should my kids really bother with learning music? The answer to this is yes, because many research studies have proven that music contributes unequivocally to the positive growth in the human brain. More researchers have experimented again and come to the same conclusion the original researchers did in 1993 – that if you listen to Mozart it increases your spatial understanding.

More studies done in 1994 by Rauscher and her associates revealed that following eight months of keyboard training, nursery school age children showed a 46% increase in their spatial reasoning IQ, an ability that is crucial for specific kinds of mathematical analysis. So the bottom line is this: practicing and studying music does indeed help in brain growth in many important ways. Anyway, if you love music, you don’t have anything to worry about if you try, and a lot of benefits to gain.

Ever Heard Of Justin Roper Boots?

Posted by Dan on Jan 6, 2009 in Lucky Hit

You are probably not alone if you haven’t heard of a particular brand of boots known as Justin Boots.  But these boots are made in Texas right here in the good old USA and are gaining popularity.  It helped that investor extraordinaire Warren Buffet bought the company just a few short years ago.

And whatever Warren Buffet invests in something, it is instantly in the media spotlight.  Actually, the company isn’t doing well just because of Warren, but because they make a quality product at a great price.

Justin Boots are known worldwide for their line of cowboy boots, but they’ve expanded their boot line to include roper boots and Justin work boots.  If you wear work boots for your job every day like I do, you can appreciate a good boot.  One that’s well made will last for a number of years.  The pair that I currently own, I’ve been wearing on the job for ten years now.

If you’re not familiar with Justin roper boots, chances are you are not from the South.   Roper boots are really a cross between work boots and cowboy boots.  They have the look of cowboy boots, but not as fancy, and the durability of work boots.  They are usually worn by ranchers and rodeo people.

With most boot manufacturers transferring their businesses overseas to cut costs, it’s nice to know that Justin Boots remains firm in the United States and takes great pride in their manufacturing processes.   Plus, who wouldn’t want their Justin cowboy boots made anywhere but in Texas, right?
