Review of the Canon EOS 40D

Posted by Dan on Jan 7, 2009 in Lucky Hit

The Canon EOS 40D is a 10 megapixel SLR digital camera that saw a lot of hype prior to its release. According to users who have bought this camera, it lives up to the hype – and then some. Its DIGIC III image processor and large 3 inch LCD make it a favorite among casual photographers and professionals alike.

Users have nothing but lavish praise for this camera. The Canon EOS 40D consistently gets 5-star ratings and plenty of glowing reviews from owners. Some laud the camera’s impressive light sensitivity and its hefty size. The camera feels substantial, not like something fragile that might break with rough treatment. With the EFS 17-85 IS in place, the camera weighs in at two and a half pounds! But it does fit into the photographer’s hands naturally, and handles very well.

Professional action photographers use this camera for outdoor work and enjoy its sharpness and color identity. The camera even cleans itself every time it is turned off, thanks to an automatic sensor cleaning feature.

Some users feel that the Canon EOS 40D is more suited to advanced camera users. The sheer number of features can be intimidating. Customers recommend a lot of patience and exploration, or even the purchase of special training DVDs to help new photographers learn the ins and outs of the 40D.

Here are just a few of the Canon EOS 40D’s many features:

* 10.1 Megapixel CMOS Sensor
* DIGIC III Image Processor
* RAW, JPEG File Format
* Canon EF/EF-S Lens Mount
* Auto and Manual Focus
* Auto and Manual Exposure
* ISO 100-1600 (3200 Enhanced)
* 3.0-inch LCD
* Compact Flash Memory
* Lithium-ion Battery
* USB Cable
* Video Cable
* Neck Strap
* Battery Charger

The Canon EOS 40D is an SLR professional grade digital camera with image resolutions of 3888 x 2592,  2816 x 1880, and 1936 x 1288. It has a minimum shutter speed of 30 seconds, and a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000 seconds. Pictures can be snapped rapid-fire for excellent action shots. The EOS 40D does up to 75 images in burst mode. Its exposure controls include Auto, Manual, Daylight / Sunny (Preset), Cloudy (Preset), Fluorescent (Preset), Tungsten (Preset), Shade (Preset), and Flash (Preset).

A few critics voice disappointment that the camera kit doesn’t come with a lens hood as would be expected from a camera of this caliber. But complaints are few and far between. The Canon EOS 40D would be a great gift for a photography student, journalist, or anyone who is ready to move away from point-and-shoots. This is a real camera for real photographers.

The Canon EOS 40D retails for about $1,200 US.

Data Acquisition

Posted by Dan on Jan 7, 2009 in Lucky Hit

Data acquisition is an important technique in many fields of research, particularly in the life sciences. There are few extant systems capable of allowing remote access to a data acquisition system by multiple investigators, especially in real time. Data acquisition is the process of extracting, transforming, and transporting data from the source systems and external data sources to the data processing system to be displayed, analyzed, and stored. A data acquisition systems (DAQ) typically consist of transducers for asserting and measuring electrical signals, signal conditioning logic to perform amplification, isolation, and filtering, and other hardware for receiving analog signals and providing them to a processing system, such as a personal computer. Data acquisition is widely used in many areas of industry. Data acquisition is used to acquire data from sensors and other sources under computer control and bring the data together and store and manipulate it.

Data acquisition is controlled by a “protocol”, which is simply a graph file that contains a series of output waveforms. It also contains instructions about which input channels to record signals from, how many episodes to acquire, etc. Data acquisition boards is the sampling of the real world to generate data that can be manipulated by a computer. Sometimes abbreviated DAQ, data acquisition typically involves acquisition of signals and waveforms and processing of the signals to obtain desired information. Data acquisition is information. The more information you have, the better you can perform your job.

Data acquisition is accomplished with the help of a computer. With the Varian Unity INOVA spectrometer a SUN workstation is used and the VNMR software runs the necessary processes. Data acquisition is made by a photon-counting detector (CP40). A VME-based computer under OS9 controls the detector and stocks the data. Data acquisition card is further complicated by the upgrades to new networking technologies that are generally prohibitively expensive or impossible for researchers to monitor. Statistics collection functionality takes resources directly away from forwarding of packets/frames, which tends to drive commercial providers toward switches from vendors that sacrifice potential research functionality in exchange for forwarding performance/throughput.

Data acquisition is the process of automatically taking measurements such as temperature, pressure, flow, humidity, geographic position, vibration, salinity or a thousand and one other parameters. The measurements may be for later analysis, for the control of a process or for simply displaying to interested personnel.

How Fleas May Cause Additional Health Matters in Cats

Posted by Dan on Jan 7, 2009 in Lucky Hit

If you have observed your kitty itching a good deal recently or have reason to believe you may have a flea problem be sure you’re aware of the peripheral problems fleas can cause. Unfortunately fleas can come with additional cat health problems.

Some cats are allergic to fleas and they may experience an allergic reaction or suffer from allergic dermatitis. Fleas can also carry feline worms — specifically feline tapeworm — so a flea infestation in addition to being very uncomfortable may also create a problem with tapeworm.

Once you discover you have fleas the first objective is getting rid of them. After you have treated for fleas you can treat any other cat health problems the fleas might have produced.

Effective flea treatment involves treating your cat, your home and the area outside where your cat spends time. Because it involves so many areas you will need to consider all the available options. If you have children, if your pets have problems with traditional flea treatments or if you dislike like working with pesticides it might be a good idea to look for a natural flea control for your cat.

One of the more popular natural flea treatments is diaomaceous earth, a powder that dehydrates and kills fleas. Diatomaceous earth is safe enough to use directly on your pets, you can also sprinkle it into the carpet, on furniture in your pet’s bedding etc.

If you are looking for a more conventional method one of the easiest to use is the once a month topical, that is placed on your cat’s back between the shoulder blades where she isn’t able to lick it. You’ll also need to treat your house with something like a flea bomb or flea spray.

The other way to begin eradicating fleas immediately is to vacuum every day and dispose of the vacuum bag. Vacuum your carpet, your furniture and any place your cat may spend a lot of time in the home.

Always read and follow directions carefully with all flea control methods because many contain ingredients that can be harmful to pets and people when not practiced appropriately.

El Fili Summary

Posted by Dan on Jan 7, 2009 in Lucky Hit

The vacation is coming to a close, and pretty soon it will be back to school or back to work. But I still haven’t finished reading the different chapter summaries of Jose Rizal’s El Filibusterismo.

There are 37 chapters, and the novel is quite riveting (although I still prefer the more romantic Noli Me Tangere). The El Fili has darker undercurrents which talk about revolution. It is easy to understand how the main character (Ibarra in the Noli) has transformed into Simoun in the El Fili.

As I’ve mentioned earlier, time is running out. I’m scrambling for a summary (or buod) of the entire novel. Perhaps if I had the luxury of time, then I would carefully savor Rizal’s writings and get to know his characters better.

Characters such as Padre Florentino, Fray Damaso, Isagani, Maria Clara, Senor Pasta, and many more will surely be treasured and remembered thanks to this masterpiece of Jose Rizal. Among the colorful characters I shall never forget is Donya Victorina, who was first introduced in Chapter 1 of the El Fili.

The strange thing is, most of us fail to appreciate the novel while we are still in high school or college. It is usually only when we have left the four walls of our school, when we are busy with work and family, that we finally learn to appreciate Rizal’s Noli and El Fili better.

That’s when we have more time, somewhat, to go back and read those old, yellowing pages. There’s no pressure, no high grades to aim for. There’s only the still, quiet air around us as we ease into a comfortable chair.

And as we go deeper into the story, we remember our life back then. Back when we were teenagers wishing we did not have to read Rizal, and back to the days when we had the time of our lives with our friends.

Truly, required reading does not have to be boring. It does not have to be some kind of chore. We may not see the true value today, but I am certain that somewhere down life’s road, we shall come back.

In the meantime, I will return to the pages of the El Filibusterismo, and admire the skill and writing talent of Jose Rizal.

Africa as a continent is well known for having one of the widest ranges of biodiversity in the world and it is that reason why so many people choose an African Safari to give them treasured memories that will last for an entire lifetime. Safari is perfect for getting up and close to animals that you wouldn’t normally see and bask in scenery that you would never normally come across and with amount of national parks and wilderness within the continent, there is never a better place to do it.

African Safaris can be the perfect experience for anyone, whether they are an animal enthusiast or not and the joy of sitting in an open vehicle with the most feared and wild animals roaming about around you can be somewhat overwhelming. The one thing that may set you back about a Safari in Africa is the traveling time that it can take to reach such wonderful destinations but once you have experienced all there is to experience, you will never regret the trip that you have been on.

Planning for an African Wildlife Safari can take a little bit of time and thought but once you have mastered the art of planning the perfect trip you can sit back and enjoy all of the wonders that it brings. Budget is very often a main consideration for such an exuberant experience but there are ways in which you can try to cut back on costs, like hiring a cottage on the game reserve that you are visiting or making use of the readily available guides in the area instead of those that come with the more expensive trips.
