Fancy Dress vs Postal Strikes

One of the UK’s largest fancy dress online retailers claims it may face a bill of at least £50,000 as a result of the postal strike. Jokers’ Masquerade in Newbury, Berkshire, sends out 4,000 parcels a day during October, its busiest times of the year.

Two years ago, a strike cost the firm £47,000 in additional delivery costs. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said it had been “pushed” into striking by “aggressive Royal Mail management”. The first nationwide postal strike in two years began at 0400 BST, 23rd Oct..

‘Protect reputation’

Rob Hamilton-Day, operations manager at the Jokers’ Masquerade warehouse, said he had “had to take the contingency measure of using another courier” earlier in the week. He said it was better for the firm to lose some profit by spending the extra money on deliveries, rather than lose its long-term reputation. But this year’s extra deliveries would cost the firm far more than those it faced two years ago, he said.

The firm will use the courier until the end of October. Mr Hamilton-Day added the firm was also considering switching deliveries away from Royal Mail permanently as a result of the current strike.

Terry Jackson, regional secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), said: “Our postmen and postwomen don’t want any businesses to go away from Royal Mail, equally they don’t want to lose any money on strike action.

“Nonetheless, they’ve been pushed into this situation by an aggressive Royal Mail management.”
