New President Brings New Hope For the Environment
The new administration in the White House as of January 20, 2009 gives me some new hope for the future. Mr. Obama shows that he has a completely different understanding of environmental issues than the former president.
Unlike Mr. Bush, who seemed totally oblivious of the future of our planet, Mr. Obama already has shown very clearly that his administration is prepared to tackle the most pressing enviromental challenges such as the global warming.
In his inaugural speech, the President said for instance that: “We will harness the sun and the winds and the soils to fuel our cars and run our factories.”
It is quite clear that Mr. Obama is intent on phasing out the use of fossil fuels and replacing them with primarily “green” energy from renewable sources. This is expected to speed up the installation of solar panels and such things all over the US. Green energy, which got the cold shoulder during the Bush era, is now to recieve red-carpet treatment.
Residential solar panels can be a tremendous contributor in the effort to reduce the US dependency on coal-fired power plants for generation of electricity. And not only that, but with the decreasing cost of photovoltaic cells they become a realistic alternative for the average home owner, who needs to consider costs carefully before making an investment in home improvement.
Cheap solar panels may pay for themselves within a few years – and then they deliver virtually free electric power for decades! Let us hope that Mr. Obama will be elected for another period when the time comes. Our environment needs him.
